“Svalbard and the Geopolitics of the Arctic” with Stian Bones
In this lecture, Bones will examine the strategic importance of Svalbard from a historical perspective, focusing in particular on the roles played by the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia.

He will trace these developments up to the present day, when Russia, the United States and China all appear to have shifted their Arctic policies. Bones will therefore also situate present-day Svalbard within a broader Arctic great power context.
This lecture is a part of a pilot project at UNIS, but will be open to anyone. The lecture will be given in English.
About the presenter:
Stian Bones is Professor of Modern History at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. His research focuses on the history of foreign and security policy, particularly Norway’s position in the High North and the Arctic. His areas of interest include Norway in great-power politics, subversion and influence operations, polar politics, and security policy strategies.
