The Polar Academy contributes to the education of future Arctic scientists through its annual summer schools. The Arctic is rapidly increasing in global significance, as climate change, globalization, and geopolitical developments reshape environmental, societal, and political conditions in the High North. The complex challenges and opportunities facing the Arctic will be addressed by today’s early-career researchers and decision-makers.
The summer schools apply a unified “Three Poles” framework linking the Arctic, Antarctic, and Himalayan regions. This overarching perspective highlights shared challenges related to climate change, environmental pressure, and global interconnections. The 2026 summer school, The Global Arctic, introduces a one-pole perspective, focusing on the Arctic as an integrated part of global systems.
The interdisciplinary curriculum explores how climate change, transboundary pollution, and globalization influence science, commerce, security, and geopolitics in and beyond the Arctic. A key objective is to train participants to think across disciplinary boundaries and engage with applied and complex societal challenges. The programme also establishes a conceptual foundation for the 2027 summer school, which will expand the perspective to include the Himalayan region.
The summer school will be held in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, from 7 to 17 June 2026, with English as the working language. Accommodation in shared double rooms, selected meals, and field activities are included.
The target group is PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Applications are submitted to the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research (NVP) via an online application form and should include a CV and a cover letter.
Application deadline: 8 March
Selected candidates will be contacted by 31 March
