The Norwegian Prime Minister met with students from UNIS and received a briefing on Arctic safety and the preparations needed to attend academic field work in extreme Arctic conditions.

On World’s Ocean Day 8 June, UNIS’ new research boat, Hanna Resvoll, was baptized in Longyearbyen. The boat is named after the first female researcher on Svalbard, Hanna Resvoll-Holmsen, Norway’s first environmentalist.

HRH Crown Prince Haakon and HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway visited the University Centre in Svalbard today. Students informed the royal couple about their field work and emphasized the importance of safety in the field.

UNIS celebrated its 25th anniversary over two days with students, staff and distinguished guests. Minister of education and integration, Jan Tore Sanner, said UNIS the last 25 years has laid a solid foundation for further development of world-class research and education.
