Sharing teaching materials

For UNIS lecturers and course responsibles

Through our agreement with Kopinor, UNIS lecturers are granted limited rights to share copyright-protected materials with their students. Our institutional subscription agreements also grant similar sharing rights in most cases.

This page contains a summary of what our agreements allow us to share. As a rule, all teaching materials must be distributed in a closed environment; for example in Canvas or a OneDrive folder that only your students have access to.

The library can assist in acquiring permission to use publications that aren’t covered by our agreements. Contact your department librarian if you need help with this, or for other questions related to copyright clearance at UNIS:

General rules

The following types of works can be shared with your students freely:

  • Anything shared under an open license, like a CC-BY license.
  • Any text that is freely and legally available on the internet.
  • If you obtain written permission from the copyright holder yourself, you can share the work accordingly.

When sharing excerpts from a text, rather than the full work itself, the original must be clearly cited.

Journal Publications
  • Journal articles can be shared according to the terms set by our agreements with the publisher.
    • For most publishers: we can share any article included in our library subscriptions.
    • Exceptions: The Geological Society of London, JSTOR, Nature, Taylor & Francis, Oxford University Press, and the American Meteorological Society. For these publishers, we must get permission before sharing their publications, unless it is Open Access.
  • For articles from other publishers, our Kopinor agreement allows us to share 1 article per issue per course.
Books

If you would like to share book chapters, you should contact the library.

  • We can share up to 15% of a book’s page count, but this use must be registered with Kopinor. The Library can report to Kopinor for you if you inform us of what you want to use.
  • If the page count exceeds 15%, the Library can request permission for the excess pages from Kopinor at a cost.

Please provide the following information to the library when reporting chapters: Title (and edition) of book, ISBN, page numbers, and the expected number of students that will be taking your course.

Any compendia or individual files with book chapters must be accompanied by a copyright notice. Contact the library for help regarding this.

Other materials
  • Kopinor allows for articles from periodic releases like newspapers, magazines, etc. to be shared without restrictions.
  • Contact the library for information about other kinds of materials or if in doubt.

Using protected materials

If the text (or other kind of material) you want to share is not covered by the bullet points above, the library can attempt to acquire permission for you. Contact your department librarian and provide information about exactly what you want to use. Please allow for up to 2-4 weeks of processing time.

There will likely be a cost associated with getting permission. For the time being, the library has decided to take those costs.

The following types of materials are not included as part of the Kopinor-agreement:

  • Audio- and audiovisual works.
  • Computer programs.
  • Games, interactive teaching tools, etc.
  • Original copies of art, photographs, etc.
