Ole Arve Misund is new UNIS director

Ole Arve Misund (57) will take over as director of the University Centre in Svalbard after Gunnar Sand. Misund has worked at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) for the past 25 years, and is looking forward to start his new position on Svalbard next year.

– I am looking forward to start my work at UNIS and be part of the further development of the institution together with the staff and Board, Ole Arve Misund (57) says, adding that he wants to continue the good work done by director Gunnar Sand. Sand is officially leaving UNIS today after a five year tenure.
Nationally important structure
– UNIS is a nationally important structure in the Arctic dimension of the Norwegian research field, and I want to contribute to strengthening the position the institution already has in the Arctic, he says.
Misund is currently research director at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Bergen, Norway. With his 25 years long background within marine research, he wants to make the IMR’s presence on Svalbard stronger.
– In cooperation with UNIS I want to strengthen the presence of IMR on Svalbard, he says. Misund will have an adjunct position at IMR while working at UNIS.
Ole Arve Misund plans to join UNIS in late February or beginning of March 2012 for a contract period of four years.
