Last week, all new UNIS students participated in the AS-101 Arctic Survival and Safety Course. Five days of theoretical and practical training in first aid, polar bear protection, navigation, setting up an emergency camp, and safe travel on sea ice and glaciers (including taking a bath in freezing water, wearing a snowmobile suit) were followed by a day on the glacier Longyearbreen putting all new knowledge to use.

Lauris Boissonnot studied the effects of an earlier sea ice retreat on the key Arctic zooplankter Calanus glacialis. Her master thesis reveals that the species is able to adapt to a changing climate.
