Safety course for new students

22 January 2016

Last week, all new UNIS students participated in the AS-101 Arctic Survival and Safety Course. Five days of theoretical and practical training in first aid, polar bear protection, navigation, setting up an emergency camp, and safe travel on sea ice and glaciers (including taking a bath in freezing water, wearing a snowmobile suit) were followed by a day on the glacier Longyearbreen putting all new knowledge to use.

New student hostel in Svalbard

23 February 2015

Today, the Ministry of Education and Research unveiled extra funding for student housing in Norway. The funding includes a brand new student hostel with 80 units in Longyearbyen. – This is great news, says UNIS director Ole Arve Misund.

New student hostel opened

The new student hostel with 88 rooms was formally opened for the UNIS students yesterday. Sandra Heldal (23) was one of the first students to move into “Sjøskrenten” student hostel.

Arctic zooplankton can adapt to a changing Arctic climate
