PhD candidate Erkka Heino has studied the spatial impact of solar proton events in the Earth’s atmosphere. His research shows that current proton forcing in climate models significantly overestimates the impact area of solar proton events. Heino will defend his thesis on Wednesday 18 December at UNIS.

The Ministry of Education and Research has allocated funds for two new PhD positions within renewable energy at UNIS. – This allows us to build up a new scientific field in the Arctic Technology department, says UNIS director Harald Ellingsen.

The duration of the productive season is crucial for the Arctic copepod Calanus glacialis to have higher success than its Atlantic sibling C. finmarchicus in a changing Arctic, concludes PhD candidate Maja Hatlebakk in her doctoral thesis. Hatlebakk will defend her thesis on Wednesday 20 November at UNIS.

Climate warming is rapidly altering the physical marine environment in fjords on the west coast of Svalbard towards a more temperate state. Reductions in sea ice cover and increased ocean temperatures are evident, resulting in changes of ice-associated and pelagic ecosystems.
