Apply now for UNIS autumn semester courses! There are 39 courses on bachelor, master and PhD level that are now open for application. The duration of the courses ranges from two weeks up to a whole semester. The application deadline is 15 April 2016.

Scientists from Oslo School of Architecture and Design and Tromsø Academy of Landscape and Territorial Studies have, together with architecture and landscape architecture students, studied Longyearbyen as a place and Svalbard as a territory.

As of 1 February 2016, Dr. Frank Nilsen is acting Managing Director at UNIS. Dr. Frank Nilsen is professor in oceanography and comes from the position as departemental leader of the Arctic Geophysics department at UNIS. Nilsen is acting managing director until the UNIS board of directors appoints a permanent managing director.

Last week, all new UNIS students participated in the AS-101 Arctic Survival and Safety Course. Five days of theoretical and practical training in first aid, polar bear protection, navigation, setting up an emergency camp, and safe travel on sea ice and glaciers (including taking a bath in freezing water, wearing a snowmobile suit) were followed by a day on the glacier Longyearbreen putting all new knowledge to use.

The Svalbard Seminar Series (Svalbardseminaret) is an annual collaboration between the Governor of Svalbard, the Norwegian Polar Institute and UNIS, covering various topics relevant to inhabitants and visitors. This year, the seminar series opens Thursday 21 January and continues biweekly until Thursday 11 February.
