The department of Arctic biology at UNIS has for an extended number of years done research and education on the vegetation in Adventdalen and the species eating it – geese as well as reindeer. This year’s total count of reindeer in Adventdalen has just finished.

From 9 until 15 June, the annual Outreach Cruise took place on board R/V Helmer Hanssen in the waters surrounding Spitsbergen. Business executives, politicians, researchers, and representatives from public management took part in the cruise to witness the changing Arctic and to learn about the research activity taking place in the archipelago and surrounding sea areas.

If you are longing for sea ice, the development so far is indeed depressing. This winter is unusually warm in Svalbard and we may face the largest failure in sea ice formation in West-Spitsbergen ever, according to scientists from UNIS and the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute.
