Age related tooth wear has significant consequences for digestive processes and energy gain in Svalbard reindeer, concludes UNIS PhD candidate Vebjørn Veiberg in his thesis. He will be defending his thesis on patterns, causes and consequences of tooth wear of the Svalbard reindeer on 21 September 2007 at the University of Oslo.
Climate change may bring more snow in the winter on Svalbard. Can the plants that thrive in the current harsh Arctic climate survive such a development? UNIS biologist Elisabeth Cooper hopes to find the answer – with the help of snow fences.
Research done by associate professor Inger Greve Alsos (now at UNIS) and co-workers at the National Centre for Biosystematics shows that plants have spread frequently in the Arctic and that an increase in temperatures may result in that many new plants species pop up in Svalbard.
Svalbard has many important stopover sites for migrating geese during the spring. But only a few of these stopover sites are known today. There is a pressing need to identify more of these sites in order to implement effective management actions, concludes Christiane E. Hübner in her PhD thesis, which she will defend at UNIS 8 March 2007.
