Spectacular find could rewrite polar bear history 17.12.07
In 2004 UNIS geology students found an ancient polar bear jawbone at Svalbard. This find could confirm that polar bears already have survived one interglacial period, bringing hope that they also can survive the current warming climate.

The dynamics of Svalbard glaciers 31.10.07
Calving and surging glaciers play a major role in delivering land ice to Arctic waters. Changes in calving frequency might impact sea transport, fisheries and oil exploration in the Arctic. However, these changes are poorly understood. A new Ph.D. project at UNIS aims at increasing the understanding of glacier changes in a shifting climate.

After 77 days, 1000 km on ski and one sunburn, the Frozen Five have returned. Hella, Lucas, Mats, Ulli, Kim and André the dog made it safely back to Longyearbyen and UNIS after skiing around Spitsbergen.

Explaining intrusion of warm water in West Spitsbergen fjords 01.06.07
The ocean monitoring program in West Spitsbergen show that in the winter 2005/06, periods of sustained northerly winds caused extensive flooding of the coastal waters with warm Atlantic Water from the West Spitsbergen Current, thus interrupting the normal cycle of ice formation.

Testing oil pollution in Arctic waters 22.05.07
Recently two Arctic Technology courses set sail southwards to perform basic experiments on the behavior of oil pollution in ice infested waters, and to measure the strength of sea ice ridges to estimate ice loads on offshore structures in the Barents Sea.

For the first time the warm West-Spitsbergen current is appearing near the surface at 79° N. This means that the fjord ice on Svalbard is disappearing at great speed.

Around Spitsbergen in 80 days 29.03.07
The five former UNIS students started their ski trip from Longyearbyen to South Cape after lunch today. The five, accompanied by four sledges and a dog, will then go from the South Cape all the way to the North Cape of Spitsbergen before returning to Longyearbyen.

Migrating geese and their food plants 02.03.07
Svalbard has many important stopover sites for migrating geese during the spring. Only a few of these stopover sites are known today. There is a pressing need to identify more of these sites in order to implement effective management actions, concludes Christiane E. Hübner in her Ph.D. thesis, which she will defend at UNIS March 8th 2007.

The IPY is here! 01.03.07
UNIS celebrated the opening of the IPY 2007-08 from early morning until late evening, with seminars, speeches and artwork. The 7th graders at the Longyearbyen School have, together with local artist Olaf Storø, made magnificent ice sculptures which were admired by many.
