Library regulations

  1. Faculty, staff and students at UNIS and institutions with a special library agreement have access to the UNIS library, and may borrow documents for loan.

  2. Borrowing books or receiving documents as Inter Library Loan is free of charge (i).

  3. The library will only process Inter Library Loan requests that are needed for regular research or studies at UNIS or the institution with a library agreement (ii).

  4. Normally the lending period for books is 4 weeks, however books with a waiting list have shorter lending period. The lending period is often shorter for books from other libraries.

  5. Reference books, printed journals and books in very high demand are not available for loan. Also, some books that are very hard to replace are not for loan. These documents you may read in the library.

  6. Our own books may be renewed if they are not reserved for another patron. Quite often books from other libraries cannot be renewed.

  7. Documents on hold must be picked up within a week.

  8. The patron is responsible for returning the books within the due date or the patron will have to ask for renewal within the due date.

  9. The patron is responsible for returning the books in the same condition as when
borrowed. Library books are not to be taken a long distance without permission (iii).

  10. You cannot transfer your loans to others (iv). Let the other patron reserve the book instead.

  11. Patrons loosing or damaging library documents will be fines (v). The minimum fine is 700 NOK (vi). The claim will be sent after the third reminder. Then the lending rights are suspended until the claim is paid or the patron’s replacement copy is received. Should the lost documents be found, the library holds the property of the lost book also after the claim has been paid, however, the patron will be refunded the claim, except the processing costs of 400 NOK.

  12. Unpaid claims will be debited your pay check if you’re having a working agreement with UNIS, if not, unpaid claims will be transferred to a collecting agency.

  13. Violations of these lending rules may lead to loss of lending rights in the UNIS library.

(i) Unless stated otherwise in library agreements with other institutions.

(ii) The library does not handle ILL request for private use, i.e. fiction or hobbies.

(iii) It’s good service to be able to recall the book and get the book to the next patron within less than 4 working days.

(iv) You don’t want to track the books or pay the fines for other patrons …

(v) It’s best to see the library staff as soon as possible after the second overdue notice - or once you’ve damaged a library book or lost track of it.

(vi) There are no maximum fines so the cost of replacing the book is often used - on top of that 400 NOK is always added as administrative costs.
