For the last 20 years, I have conducted research into glaciers and
glacial geology in many parts of the world, including Scotland, Norway,
Svalbard, Iceland,
the European Alps, North and South America, and the Himalaya of India, Nepal and Tibet. I gained my PhD from the University of St Andrews
in 1990, on moraine formation and palaeoclimate on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. I
remained at St Andrews for a further 3 years as a NERC Postdoctoral Research
Fellow working on subglacial till formation, then was appointed Lecturer in
geography at the University
of Aberdeen. In 1999, I
returned to St Andrews as Reader in Geography
and Geosciences, where I teach courses in Glaciology, Climatology and
Meteorology, and the Philosophy of Science. I have taught short courses in
glacial geology at UNIS for the past 5 years, and was appointed Professor of
Glaciology here in 2006. My current research interests include the dynamics of
calving glaciers, the response of high altitude glaciers to climate change, and
the application of speleological techniques to the exploration of glacial
drainage systems.
At UNIS I am responsible for the following courses:
AG325 Glaciology
Snowball 1
