Northern Region conference «Nordområdekonferance» is opened today in Tromsø. It is arranged in November 10-12 by The Research Council of Norway (RNC). The main topic is presentation of the results of the interational researches on the northern areas, carried out in 2010.
NorthPOP project has been selected by the Research Council as one of the prominent examples to be presented during the conference. The RCN in cooperation with “Bravissimo” film-company has produced a Video presentation of NorthPOP as a part of the conference.

Natalia Goryunova. Photo: N.Marchenko

2 November Natalia Goryunova has presented the thesis
“Input and distribution of nano- and microparticles (scattered sedimentary matter) in the Arctic at the border "ocean-atmosphere"
in the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology Russian Academy of Sciences, in Moscow.
The defense was very successful and now we have one more Doctor of science in our NorthPOP team. Natalia came to the project on the first NorthPOP conference in St. Petersburg (may 2008) and became one of the most active and enthusiastic member of the team. She was designer and driving force of the first NorthPOP field expedition on Svalbard.
Some of the NorthPOP field works had been used and demonstrated during defense.
We wish Natalia all the best in her future work.

NorthPOP research Visit. Evgeny Ishchenko (Typhoon) in Tromsø (NILU).
16 March – 3 June. Supervisor Eldbjørg S. Heimstad.

Almost one year ago Evgeny came first time on NorthPOP conference as a delegate of NW branch of Typhoon (Saint-Petersburg). After the particular and fluent presentation he became NorthPOP participant. Evgeny graduated from St-Petersburg State University (SPbSU), Chemistry Department, Specialization ecological chemistry.
Evgeny attended the second NorthPOP MS-course in September 2009 and now he is in Tromsø, working under COPOL project. COPOL is an international project aiming to study how uptake and transfer of contaminants in food webs will be effected by future changes in climate. Read about Evgeny’s investigation here.

The second NorthPOP MS-courses has finished today in Tromsø. 14 students (7 Russian and 7 Norwegian) took part. 2 weeks they learned the modern methods of Mass spectrometry in the labs (photo here) as 3 groups and summarized their achievements on final seminar with group presentations (see photo report by Varvara Petrova and the presentation by one of the groups).
The first seminar (2008) participant – Elizaveta Igumnova (on the right) tried her force already as a teacher this year.
Many Thanks to course organizers Einar Jensen and Terje Vasskog.
Now Russian participants on their way home, but Alexandra Egorova (on the left) will continue her studies and experiments in NILU (Oslo). Good Luck.

The second NorthPOP MS-courses
started yesterday (15.09.09) in Tromsø and will continue till 1 October (read about the first one here). There are some changes from last year. One important change is that the course now is an official course of Tromsø University named FAR 3016 - Modern extraction, chromatography and mass spectrometric methods and it gives a 5 ECTS credit. The course will be longer and the students must spend more time in the laboratory. Together with Russian students several Norwegian will be participate (three their representatives on the left part of the photo). Russian participants (from the left)are Evgeny Ishchenko (Typoon, St. Petersburg), Varvara Petrova ((SRCES RAS), Fedor Kryuchkov (SPbSU) Alexandra Egorova (VNIIM), Leonid Lisitsyn (SPbSU) Mikhail Pavlov (VNIIM), and Elizaveta Igumnova (SPbSU), who took the picture. The courses have been organized by Einar Jensen (at the center) and Terje Vasskog.
Roland Kallenborn will give the lectures next week.
We wish them all the best.
Fresh report about the course will come soon.

The third NorthPOP South Fjord expedition has successful finished with the sampling preparation at NILU (Lillestrøm).
HEARTFELT THANKS to our COLLEAGUES from NIVA, especially Jens Skei for GREAT HELP with SAMPLING.
Larisa Khoroshko and Varvara Petrova are coming back to St.Petersburg.

The third NorthPOP expedition is carried out now in Oslo fjord and NILU. It is developing of one of the supported project
SULFUR ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF NORWEGIAN FIORDS.

Larisa Khoroshko and Varvara Petrova (St.Petersburg. Scientific Research Center for Ecological Safety RAS) and their colleagues from NIVA collect samples of bottom sediments in Oslo fjord during boat cruise.
Sulfur organic compounds could be analyzed in Russia by high performance gas
chromatography connected to low and high resolution mass spectrometers (GC/LRMS
and GC/HRMS).

The planning results will answer following fundamental questions:
- are there the extremely toxic chlorine- and sulfur-containing compounds (like a mustard
gas, which are detected in the eastern Gulf of Finland) in Norwegian fiords?
- are the sulfur organic compounds specific for Norwegian fiords or common for the both Baltic Sea and Northern Sea?
- is there a risk of increase in production of these pollutants
leading to catastrophic damage to local ecosystems?

12th EuCheMS International Conference on Chemistry and the Environment had been held 14-17 June 2009, Stockholm, Sweden
(in Aula Magna at Stockholm University).

The Strong NorthPOP team was represented there by R. Kallenborn, E.Heimstad ,Vladimir Nikiforov famous scientists and 3 students from St.Petersburg University as well.

We are very glad to inform that the committee awarded Elizaveta Igumnova (very active participants of 2 NorthPOP conferences and MS-Courses) the first prize for the best poster. We can remember that Elizaveta's talk on extraction of perfluoroalcancarboxylic acids at a student conference of department of Chemistry St. Petersburg University also won the Prize!

NorthPOP has become not only laboratorial one, but also close to nature and rich with field work.

The second NorthPOP expedition successfully finished at St.Petersburg. It was “SOUTHERN (comparatively to Svalbard) RIVER TOURE” for water sampling from the rivers of Leningrad, Pskov and Novgorod regions, including Il’men’, Chudskoe and Pskovskoe lakes.

Here participants ELizaveta Igumnova and Vladimir Nikiforov share their expressions.
