Academic expenses
There is no tuition fee at UNIS, but in order to do a course at UNIS all students need to pay a semester fee of 420 NOK (ca. 55 Euro). Students already immatriculated at a Norwegain institution will recieve the semester fee bill from their home institution, whereas new students need to contact the Study Administration at UNIS directly after their arrival to pick up a bill for the semester fee.
For students partaking in a scientific cruise or excursion which lasts overnight, there is a fee of NOK 200 per day for food.
Living expenses
Housing expenses are found under the “Accommodation” section.
The cost of living on Svalbard is approximately the same as in the rest of Norway. Stipulated costs for accommodation and food is about 1000 Euro (8700 NOK) per month.
All travel expenses to and from Longyearbyen must be paid by the student. It is possible for students to order tickets at reduced prices from Scandinavian Airlines, www.sas.no.
Financing
Students are expected to finance their studies and stay in Longyearbyen. UNIS offers no financial aid or scholarships to Norwegian or international students. Norwegian students can apply for grants and loans from the Statens Lånekasse.
Insurance
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate types of insurance. This includes travel-, accident- and health insurance. All UNIS students are insured during activities that UNIS initiate, however during leisure time you will need private insurance coverage. All Nordic citizens are insured through the Norwegian public health insurance. All other citizens should check with their local authorities whether their home country insurance is valid on Svalbard.
