Arctic Environmental Management (15 ECTS)
The course aims to acquaint students with the major issues in management of Arctic regions. The course is run by the biology department but is open to all students at UNIS and while some biological knowledge is helpful it is not obligatory. The course assumes no previous biological experience.
During the course students are encouraged to meet and discuss issues with the inhabitants of Longyearbyen. To assist with this the course visits Vilmarkssenter to learn about running an ecologically friendly tourist company on Svalbard, goes into the working coal mine in Longyearbyen and visits the satellite ground station, SvalSat, on Platåfjellet. In addition, students on the course present short lectures on an 'Arctic issue'. For each presentation the students are required to discuss the issue with local inhabitants in order to obtain the views of people living in the High Arctic.
